How did I miss this one?

I enjoy a good Tim Burton flick, especially his older works like Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Beetlejuice, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

And of course I love his animated masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas so it's surprising that I've somehow never seen Frankenweenie. Well, now that I've been informed the  movie features Gremlins-esqu monster Sea Monkeys I will correct this post haste!

Rainbow Sea Monkey.

 Nice to sea the flying Sea Monkeys (Sky Monkeys?) getting in on Pride Month.

David Speakman shared this photo and explanation on Facebook.

"This very rare form of rainbow - sometimes called a fire rainbow - is caused by the angle of the sunlight hitting cirrus ice crystals in the atmosphere.  The effect is fleeting, usually only lasting a few seconds before either disappearing or turning normal-cloud white. 

This was spotted June 5 in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. 

Some think fire rainbows are where the concept of dragons came from.

The fire rainbow is play of light weather phenomenon,  a form of Circumhorizontal arc."

Syncopating Sea Monkeys

I previously wrote about the Sea Monkey Swim Team. Now it turns out there is a band called the Syncopating Sea Monkeys. They play traditional jazz and they're right across the bridge from me in West Sacramento. Our Sacramento Traditional Jazz Festival, one of the biggest in the world, has passed. But next year I will do my darnedest to get out and see these kids swing it.

Sea Monkey Day Cocktails

NOTE: Old Sea-Monkey aquarium as glass = cool

D'oh! I got so caught in my life as a dad, husband, comedian and comic book reader that I lost track of my responsibilities as Sea-Monkey blogger number one. Yes, I missed National Sea-Monkey Day on May 16th this year.

The fine folks at AHistoryOfDrinking.com celebrated the important national holiday by posting the following Sea Monkey cocktails. Your Sea Monkeys do not want to drink these. They want YOU to drink them, preferably after you've fed them and put them somewhere safe, secure and out of the way.

Sea Monkey Martini
recipe adapted from RA Sushi Bar & Grill, Miami, FL
* 1 1/2 oz Pineapple Juice
* 1 1/2 oz Skyy Infusions Raspberry Vodka
* 1/2 oz Black Raspberry Liqueur
* 1 oz Cranberry Juice

Glass: Cocktail
Garnish: Orange Wheel
Pour pineapple juice into a chilled cocktail glass. Add the remaining ingredients to a shaker and shake with ice. Strain slowly over the pineapple juice and try to keep the two layers separated. Float an orange wheel for garnish.

Sea Monkey Shot

* 1 1/2 oz Goldschlager
* 1/2 oz Blue Curacao
Glass: Shot
Garnish: None
Layer ingredients in order. Be sure that the Goldschlager has been completely chilled.

Sea Monkey Soup?!

Don't panic, the recession has not yet gone so deep that we're raising amazing pet Sea Monkeys for food (though their less hybrid cousins have been feeding the fishes for years). This amazing painting is by Ron English and his site popaganda.com/ is worth checking out for lots more fantastic art.

"This is the photo I've been waiting for! 2 of the sea monkeys from my 2nd batch were mating for days with no results. This female from my 3rd batch had been swimming around for several days with a male attached.
Tonight they were separated at last, and when I looked closer, I saw a dark lump on her abdomen.
I took dozens of photos (using Super Macro) then cropped them to get a good view."

Sea Monkey Mating Instructions

EHow.com is a great site where you can learn to do just about anything. But, I can not recommend this site to Sea Monkeys wanting to learn about love sweet love.
Their article on Sea Monkey Mating is, as should be clear by it's title alone, cold, academic and completely lacking in romance. Sea Monkeys, please, remember to use a little tenderness, and maybe a little Cupid's Arrow Sea-Monkey Mating Powder (c) as well.

Sea Monkey Keeper Helps Animal Shelter

I just came across a great article about a very young Sea Monkey keeper doing some real good in her community...

"Most 10-year-old children seek toys and games for their birthdays, but Hailey Harless of Abingdon, Va., wanted something different this year – a better life for animals.
So for her 10th birthday, Hailey gave her parents a special request – that her party invitations include a note telling her friends and family to bring, instead of gifts, items that can be donated to the Washington County, Va., Animal Shelter.

The family now keeps a menagerie of animals: two dogs, Katy and Shadow; two cats, Max and Hallie; a school of guppies; a hermit crab; and until recently, several snails and sea monkeys. "

Sea Monkey Swim Team

I don't know how I didn't catch this one sooner.

There is, in the Ohio communities of South Euclid and Lyndhurst a swim team operating under the name of Sea Monkeys! And they beat a team called The Sharks!

How old were you when you first discovered Sea Monkeys?
When I hear talk of the Sea-Monkeys I had 12 years now I have 17 years and still as excited as the first day

How did you first hear about them?
I saw the sea-monkeys for the first time in a cartoon called Rugrats. When I spoke here in Spain of the Sea-Monkeys people said it was a scam, to date I can prove it is not so! hehe

How popular are Sea Monkeys in Spain?
The Sea-Monkeys in Spain are not as popular as in the United States, very few people know the Sea-Monkeys, people here are different, the most highly distrustful

When did you get the tattoo?
I realize the tattoo about a month ago, I was absolutely determined that the Sea-Monkeys are something important enough for me to tattoo.
